The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), Shenzhen, China, will organize a summer school on Earth and Planetary Interiors from 1 to 5 July 2019. This will be the first of the SUSTech International Summer School series on Earth and planetary sciences. The summer school aims (1) to introduce cutting-edge research in Earth and planetary Sciences to students and early career researchers, (2) to promote collaborations between the international Earth and planetary science community and researchers based in China, and (3) to provide opportunities for prospective students to get to know the graduate and postdoctoral programs at SUSTech as well as at other prestigious institutions outside China. The 2019 summer school will focus on studies on Earth and planetary interiors from different perspectives including (but not limited to) seismology, geodynamics, mineral physics, as well as planetary geophysics. We warmly welcome senior undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers in Earth and planetary sciences and other related fields to join us for this summer school.

ABOUT ESS

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at Southern University of Science and Technology was established in December 2016. Prof. Xiaofei Chen, a renowned seismologist and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was appointed as the founding department head.

The studies in ESS concern the physics of the Earth, geo-space and planets in outer space. Through building up a world-leading program of research and education in earth and space sciences, we strive to conduct research to advance our understanding on the complex natural system of earth and space, in order to provide scientific solutions to many of the societal challenges of our time: natural hazards, natural energy resources, space exploration, etc. In the meantime, our department offers rigorous hands-on training to students and prepares them to be future leaders in academia, government and industry.

ESS encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines: Geophysics, Space Physics, Space Geodesy, and Planetary Science. By the end of September 2018, ESS has twenty-four faculty members, including four professors, four associate professors, eight assistant professors, and eight research assistant professors, Among them, there are one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, two Distinguished Young Scholars of National Science Fund. We welcome more talents to join us and work together to build a world-class research and education center for Earth and Space Sciences.
